A simple open reed tube with a breathy, human tone. Extremely difficult to master, and prized for its emotional directness.

Origin

One of the oldest instruments in the region; an end-blown reed flute.

Role in the dance

Used for longing, melancholy passages — the dancer typically answers with sustained lines rather than sharp accents.
