Nelly Mazloum

Nelly Mazloum was an unusually versatile Egyptian dancer, choreographer, actress and teacher. A child performer, she later became associated with ballet and appeared as a prima ballerina at Cairo's Royal Opera. She also worked extensively with Egyptian dance and created her own company and teaching system. Her theatrical treatment of folkloric material made her part of the broader movement that brought Egyptian regional traditions onto formal stages. Mazloum is therefore significant not only to Raqs Sharqi history but also to the development of professional theatrical Egyptian dance.
